The indexicality of photography was believed to create a 1:1 representation of the world. This was due to the method in which a photographic apparatus recorded light by chemical or electronic means – the represented object produced a visual likeness that maintained a degree of accuracy and inherent “truthfulness” that other methods of visual representation lacked. The question of whether or not truth can be ascertained through photographic methods persists today. However, perhaps it is not the question of whether or not photography is capable, but rather, to what degree is there truth in the relationship between an object photographed and the resulting image?
